General Summary

The Office of Behavioral Health Advocacy (OBHA) is an independent body protecting the interests of Washingtonians engaged in behavioral health services and their loved ones by providing consulting, resources, advocacy, and mediation for complaints against behavioral health services by individual providers and facilities. As such, the OBHA directly upholds the rights of individuals who are experiencing challenges in the public and private behavioral health systems in one of the ten regions established across Washington State. The responsibility of the Behavioral Health Advocate is to represent the constituents of their assigned BHASO district and provide them with the full breadth of behavioral health advocacy services.

Primary Responsibilities

• Assist callers requesting behavioral health advocacy services or community resources information
• Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office
• Utilize database to document client information and services accurately and efficiently
• Communicate effectively and cooperatively in the workplace
• Provide excellent customer service to callers and visitors
• Verify Insurance eligibility
• Perform new client pre-registration
• Accurately schedule or reschedule visits with Behavioral Health Advocate
• Communicate grievance and complaint process and procedures
• Provide and direct interested parties to behavioral health rights resources

Required Qualifications

• Must identify as a peer: someone with lived experience with behavioral health challenges and in recovery for a period of at least one year
• High School Diploma / GED
• Valid driver’s license
• Must have great organizational, documenting, communication, and program development skills
• Ability to be an active listener by asking questions and reflecting on what is being said
• Proficient level of ability with computer software such as Microsoft Office products
• Ability to learn tools created for use by the OBHA to enhance organization and effectiveness
• Ability to work both independently and under supervision
• Ability to maintain healthy boundaries with peers and co-workers
• Understand how to set up and breakdown virtual and in person trainings
• Be able to work in a team environment collaborating effectively with multiple diverse individuals and programs
• Ability to manage time effectively
• Strong ability to maintain self-care in a fast-paced demanding employment environment.
• Have personal lived experience and knowledge of the Washington State behavioral health system and other related systems
• Type 40+ WPM
• Data entry
• Ability to research and gather information from the internet
• The ability to work a regular schedule
• Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to start date

Preferred Qualifications

• Must identify as a peer: someone with lived experience and in recovery for a period of at least one year
• Conflict resolution experience
• Experience with documentation via database

Additional Responsibilities

responsibilities listed above, the Advocacy Coordinator will be responsible for any additional
tasks that are assigned by the regional Program Director or OBHA Director.

Compensation

• Paid Time Off (PTO) accrued hourly based on hours worked (equivalent to 3 wks/yr @ 40 hrs/wk)
• 10 paid days off specific to COVID infection upon hire, no carryover, renews January 1 (a temporary benefit with currently no established end date)
• 3 personal days per calendar year (2 personal days for 2022 if hired before Aug 31, 2022, 1 for hire dates after)
• 13 paid holidays
